CBD Reduces THC-Induced Anxiety, Another Study Finds

Anxiety of any kind is never a fun experience, and if you’re not a regular cannabis consumer, you’re likely to experience heightened levels of anxiety after smoking a joint, or munching on some edibles.

But fortunately, Dutch investigators have found that another cannabinoid may offset THC-induced anxiety.

And that cannabinoid is CBD.

The clinical trial, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, found participants who consumed equal amounts of THC and CBD reported experiencing less anxiety than when they consumed THC-dominant cannabis.

Authors of the study wrote: “Combined treatment of THC and CBD delayed the onset of anxiety, reduced its magnitude and shortened its duration compared to inhalation of THC alone.”

Study details

Dutch scientists observed a group of 26 participants in a placebo-controlled randomised trial, where they examined the effects single doses of vaporised cannabis has on anxiety.

The subjects vaporised single doses of THC-dominant cannabis, CBD-dominant, and an equal balance of both THC and CBD.

Researchers found that both THC-dominant and equally balanced doses significantly increased self-rated state anxiety compared to the placebo group.

But, the anxiety induced by the THC/CBD dose was much lower than the consumption of THC alone.

‘More favourable’ cannabinoid ratio

The authors of the study concluded:

“The present study showed that cannabis containing equivalent concentrations of THC and CBD induces less self-rated anxiety compared to THC-only cannabis in healthy volunteers.”

“The THC/CBD combination might be more favourable in clinical settings, and it may be a reasonable public health strategy to encourage cannabis breeds containing THC/CBD mixtures where recreational use of cannabis is now legal.”

The findings of this recent study also correlate with prior research which documented the anxiolytic effects of CBD and also found that participants who consumed equal amounts of THC and CBD were less likely to report experiencing side effects like paranoia.

How to add CBD to THC

You have a number of options for adding CBD to your THC.

If you smoke or vape THC-dominant flower, you could add CBD flower to the mix. Or you could add some CBD concentrates or CBD hash.

Consuming CBD oil before taking THC should also be effective at reducing THC-induced anxiety.
