Say Goodbye To Hangovers This Christmas With CBD Beer (UK)

Cannabis and alcohol have been two of mankind’s closest allies on our journey to today.

And when combined, they offer a truly unique experience. The alertness of alcohol complements the calmness of CBD – oh, and there’s little to no hangover!

Say hello to the UK’s first CBD-infused craft beer, High Flyer by Green Times Brewery.

Alcohol and cannabis

For more than 10,000 years, these two substances have been used to enhance our health and mood. In more recent times, both are still wildly popular despite periods of prohibition throughout the world.

However, while science has, of course, found alcohol to pose some serious health risks, at the same time, many of the supposed risks of cannabis use have been disproved.

In fact, it has been found that CBD, a chemical derived cannabis, can be effective in the treatment of alcohol addiction, along with many other health conditions.

That’s right, contrary to common beliefs, modern research is showing cannabis has the ability to be an ‘exit’ drug for addicts.

High Flyer: The UK’s first craft CBD beer

The combination of cannabis and alcohol is much more than a novelty. In fact, High Flyer is one of the best tasting IPA’s I’ve had the pleasure of drinking.

Rather than isolated CBD, the guys at Green Times have used a full-spectrum hemp extract (10mg per bottle) in the brewing process. This means that the beer is packed with a full range of cannabinoids (even small amounts of psychotropic THC), flavonoids and terpenes.

This gives the beer a refreshing citrus twang following the main hit of hops. The exotic flavours really work well.

How does it feel?

As both substances can relax you and lower inhibition, you might think that combining the two would be a recipe for tiredness, sedation or even sloppiness. Rather, what people report, and what I’ve found, is that the buzz you get from the alcohol is kind of anchored by the CBD.

I find that the initial rush from alcohol, that usually hits me after about two beers, is a lot smoother when CBD is involved. Where I usually get a bit excited and flushed, with CBD beer I feel calm and collected and stay grounded all evening.

A safer way to drink

There’s science to back up the value of mixing CBD with alcohol, too. A study published in the journal Psychopharmacology discovered that a dose of CBD before an alcoholic drink reliably lowered blood alcohol levels in rats.

Another study found that rodents showed less alcohol-induced neurodegeneration (degeneration of the brain) if they were to receive CBD alongside alcohol.

Additionally, this study from Free Radical Biology & Medicine showed that when rodents consumed CBD half-an-hour before alcohol, they were less likely to experience alcohol-induced oxidative damage in the liver. Rodent studies don’t directly transfer to humans, but the research regarding the combination of CBD and alcohol is interesting and promising, to say the least.

And then there are the studies on humans, like this one from Canada that found cannabis consumption protected heavy drinkers from liver cancer and many other alcohol-related conditions, including hepatitis, cirrhosis and steatosis.

This is backed up by a more recent study that looked at 8,200 people and found that the lowest prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease was in heavy cannabis users.

CBD and cannabis also have well-researched anti-inflammatory effects, which may counter the inflammatory effects of alcohol.

No more hangovers

So it would seem that CBD and cannabis can reduce the harm caused by alcohol. But does that extend to reducing hangovers as well? In my experience, and this person’s, it does.

Admittedly, I haven’t drunk enough to induce a full-on head-banging hangover, but I’ve had enough where I should be feeling fragile, anxious and unmotivated. And I don’t!

It’s possible that by boosting liver function, CBD can help the liver process alcohol more effectively, thus reducing hangovers.

CBD infused beer is perfect for those of us who don’t drink often but would like the healthiest (and tastiest) options for when we do.

With the festive season looming over us, I couldn’t be happier that Green Times have brought High Flyer to the UK market. Instead of mistletoe and wine, celebrate this year’s festive season with cannabis and beer, the perfect combo!
