Want to make your own clean, potent cannabis concentrate at home, without any solvents, fancy labs, or dangerous processes?
Rosin might be the perfect entry point. It’s safe, natural, and you can make it in your kitchen using a hair straightener.
Here’s your step-by-step guide to making rosin at home in the UK, including the important distinction between rosin and resin, and why we believe solventless concentrates like rosin are the future of safe cannabis consumption.
First of all, what is rosin?

Rosin is a cannabis concentrate made by applying heat and pressure to flower, hash, or kief to extract a thick, oily substance rich in cannabinoids and terpenes.
Unlike BHO (butane hash oil) or other solvent-based extracts, rosin is made without chemicals, making it one of the cleanest and safest ways to enjoy the power of cannabis.
You’ll often hear rosin referred to as “solventless hash oil.” And that’s exactly what it is, no butane, no alcohol, no CO₂. Just heat and pressure.
It’s pure plant medicine.
Rosin vs. resin: what’s the difference?
Let’s clear up one of the most common points of confusion.
✅ Rosin is made using only heat and pressure, nothing added, nothing removed. It’s a solventless extract.
✅ Resin, on the other hand, usually refers to either live resin, which a solvent-based extract made from fresh frozen cannabis using butane or propane, or charred resin (like pipe or bong resin), which is not something you want to consume.
At High & Polite, we support both recreational and medicinal cannabis use, but we strongly advocate for cleaner, healthier methods like:
- Dry herb vaping
- Cannabis oils and tinctures
- Edibles
- And solventless concentrates like rosin
Here’s why we prefer rosin:
✅ Solventless – No risk of residual butane or ethanol.
✅ Full-spectrum – Preserves terpenes and cannabinoids, especially when made from quality flower.
✅ Potent – Delivers a strong, clean hit in tiny doses.
✅ Customisable – You choose the strain, the source material, and the method.
✅ Medicinally valuable – Especially for patients who need strong, clean, fast-acting relief.
How to make rosin at home in the UK
The good news is, you don’t need a fancy lab or expensive equipment. You need:
- Cannabis flower (or hash/kief)
- Hair straightener (ceramic plates preferred)
- Parchment paper
- Heat-resistant gloves or oven mitts
- A rosin collection tool (dabber or metal scraper)
- Optional: Rosin press (for better yield)
Step 1: Choose Your Source Material

For beginners, dried cannabis flower is the easiest starting point.
Look for:
- High-quality, well-cured buds
- Not too wet or too dry
- Preferably organically grown (free from pesticides)
Note: Hash or dry sift kief will produce better yield and stronger rosin, but flower is a great place to start.
Step 2: Prepare Your Parchment Paper
Cut a square of parchment paper and fold it in half. Place your bud in the crease and fold it closed, creating a little envelope.
Step 3: Set Your Temperature
If you’re using a hair straightener, aim for a low temperature (90°C to 120°C / 190°F to 250°F).
Lower temps preserve terpenes (flavour & effects), while higher temps boost yield but may degrade the quality.
Start low and experiment.
Step 4: Apply Heat & Pressure

With gloves on, press the parchment envelope between the straightener plates and firmly squeeze for 5–10 seconds.
You should hear a slight sizzle.
Rosin will seep out and collect on the parchment.
Repeat with another bud as needed.
Step 5: Collect Your Rosin
Carefully open the parchment. You’ll see a golden, sticky oil on the paper.
Use a metal dabber or scraper to collect the rosin and store it in a non-stick silicone container.
Tip: Work in a cool room to make handling easier.
Some of our favorite tips for better rosin:
🔸 Use quality bud — better in, better out.
🔸 Avoid plastic bags — parchment paper is safest.
🔸 Don’t overdo the heat — too hot and you lose valuable terpenes.
🔸 Consider a manual rosin press — if you love the process and want better yields.
🔸 Store in a cool, dark place — rosin degrades with heat and light exposure.
How to use rosin safely
Rosin can be:
- Dabbed using a dab rig or electronic vaporiser
- Added to a dry herb vape (sandwiched between flower)
- Infused into oils for sublingual use
- Added to edibles (must be decarbed first if made from raw flower)
Avoid smoking it in joints or blunts, not only is it wasteful, but it contradicts our core message of choosing cleaner, safer ways to medicate.
Final word:
In a world full of over-processed products and quick fixes, making your own rosin at home is a return to simplicity, purity, and empowerment. It’s about taking your health into your own hands, and choosing clean over chemical
Whether you’re using cannabis for relief, relaxation, or deeper healing, solventless rosin offers a safe, potent, and natural way to experience the plant’s full spectrum of benefits. Keep experimenting, stay informed, and remember, you have the right to choose what goes into your body.
