Record numbers of people in the UK are out of work due to long-term illness. This isn’t just a personal hardship; it’s a national one, costing the economy billions.
But what if there was a clear, evidence-based solution that could not only help people feel better but also ease pressure on the NHS and unlock a massive financial boost for the country?
A new report by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), commissioned by Curaleaf Clinic, suggests that expanding NHS access to medical cannabis could do exactly that.
The findings are a wake-up call, proving that the conversation about cannabis has moved far beyond stigma and into the serious business of health, wellbeing, and economic recovery.
The Hard Numbers
The case for change is clear. This study brings the opportunity into sharp focus with some incredible figures:
- £13.3 billion could be added to the UK economy over the next decade.
- 2.8 million people are currently locked out of the workforce due to long-term illness.
- A 28% reduction in hospital admissions for eligible patients.
- £283 million has already been contributed to the economy by private prescriptions alone since 2018.

The Human Impact
Behind every one of those figures is a person whose life has been deeply affected. The report reveals that for those living with chronic illness, it’s not just about physical pain. For many, traditional treatments simply aren’t working.
- 48% say their current treatments actually harm their quality of life.
- 62% feel they have exhausted all traditional treatment options.
- For those unable to work, the emotional toll is huge, with 56% reporting a loss of self-esteem and 47% saying their mental health has been harmed.
Clearing the Confusion
Despite these clear benefits, we still face an issue of confusion and inaccessibility. A huge 40% of people with long-term conditions don’t even know that medical cannabis is a legal treatment option in the UK. This highlights how unclear the current system feels.
And yet, there’s an overwhelming desire for change. Nearly two-thirds of UK adults believe people with chronic ill-health should have more treatment choices. The support is there; the pathways are not.
A Clear Roadmap
The findings of this report shouldn’t be ignored. They suggest that expanding NHS access to medical cannabis could be a win-win: easing pressure on the health system and boosting the economy.
Curaleaf Clinic is calling for three key actions to make this happen: clear NHS prescribing pathways, government-funded research, and standardised training on medical cannabis in medical schools.
These steps could finally provide consistent, safe access to a treatment that is already changing lives and has the potential to help millions more.
