Are you curious about psilocybin?
The main psychoactive compound in so called ‘magic’ mushrooms moved into the mainstream this year thanks to its massive potential in mental health treatment.
A number of recent high-profile studies suggest psilocybin may have powerful antidepressant properties, especially when combined with therapy.
Interest is growing fast in psilocybin-assisted therapy and there’s a good number of psilocybin retreats springing up around the world in countries where it’s not prohibited.
At the same time microdosing psilocybin mushrooms has become popular as a sort of wellness tool among the general population, particularly in alternative health scenes but certainly not limited to them.
But what if you want to experiment with psilocybin and you can’t afford a week in Jamaica at a retreat and you don’t know how to source it here in the UK?
Well, you have a few options…
1. Pick it
Psilocybin comes from mushrooms. And the Uk has lots of them. Head out in late summer, around September time, and look for one of the mushrooms mentioned in this article: 5 Species Of Magic Mushroom That Grow Wild In The UK.
Liberty Caps are most common in the UK. Their caps look like nipples and they can be found in small clusters on rich soil in pastures, meadows and parkland. They don’t grow on cow or sheep dung, but are common in areas where livestock may roam.
As the possession of psilocybin-containing mushrooms is illegal in the UK, you may want to bend over and eat the mushrooms directly from the ground. This way you will only be breaking the law while the dangerous drug is in your mouth and belly. Once it breaks down in your gut, you’re home free!
2. Grow it
Yes, possession of magic mushrooms is illegal in the UK. However, magic mushroom spores (shroom seeds) are not. While this is purely for educational purposes and we cannot recommend you grow your own psilocybin mushrooms, here is the Ultimate Guide To Growing Magic Mushrooms In The UK.
You could buy all the equipment and set up the grow yourself, or you could buy one of these totally legal kits from a reputable UK business. Just remember, if you germinate the spores, you will be breaking the law – silly, huh?
3. Find a dealer
This can be difficult. Magic mushrooms aren’t really a product that many drug dealers offer. Therefore it can be hard to find a supplier for most people. You may have more success online, but there is a massive chance you’ll get ripped off.
How easy is it to buy magic mushrooms online?
As stated above, buying any drug online is fraught with risk. You used to be able to order magic truffles from the Netherlands as they are legal there, but most companies have now stopped shipping to the UK.
Unfortunately, it’s pretty difficult to find a reliable psilocybin mushroom seller online. They are definitely out there and you may come across one, but there will also be many scammers waiting to take your money. So exercise caution and don’t spend too much if you make an order.
Effects of magic mushrooms
After consuming magic mushrooms, most people report effects including euphoria, an alteration of perception, hallucinations and a distorted sense of time. At higher doses, it’s not uncommon for users to have profound spiritual experiences.
In fact, a recent study found that a large percentage ranked their experience with psilocybin as one of the most spiritually significant experiences of their life.
When you microdose psilocybin, expect to feel a subtle boost in mood, energy and focus, as well as more presence and reduced anxiety. Read our guide to microdosing magic mushrooms here.
How safe are magic mushrooms?
Psilocybin mushrooms are incredibly safe. In fact, according to the world’s largest annual drug survey, out of all common recreational drugs, psilocybin mushrooms, alongside ketamine and cannabis, pose the smallest risk of needing medical treatment.
Summary
For some reason or other, psilocybin and the mushrooms that produce it are prohibited in the UK. That’s despite recent research proving their powerful healing properties and safety.
If you are interested in trying psilocybin yourself, then sourcing it can be tricky. While I wouldn’t recommend trying to buy magic mushrooms online, I do think you should try growing your own (or picking them in the right season).
