Can CBD Make You Smarter?

Using CBD daily produces an overall improvement in anxiety symptoms along with better cognitive performance, a new study has found.  

Researchers affiliated with Harvard Medical School evaluated the safety and efficacy of CBD doses amongst a group of patients with moderate-to-severe anxiety over a period of 4-weeks. 

An overall improvement in anxiety symptoms was displayed along with better cognitive performance after administering CBD extracts daily.  

Authors, who published the data in the Communications Medicine journal, reported that CBD doses were “well-tolerated with no serious adverse events and few side effects.” 

The findings add to mounting evidence that CBD can be a safe and effective treatment option for anxiety.

It also raises the question of whether CBD can make you smarter?

The study 

Participants of the trial orally a full-spectrum, high-CBD sublingual solution three times daily. The extract contained 10mg of CBD and around 0.23mg of THC.  

All patients also had no experience with cannabis products beforehand, or had not consumed cannabis for at least a year. 

Prior to this study, there had been no research to examine the impact of these types of cannabis products on cognitive function. 

Significant improvements

Authors reported a significant improvement in primary outcomes which measured anxiety, and secondary outcomes which evaluated mood, sleep, and quality of life. 

Most patients achieved a reductions in anxiety after one week, with all patients seeing significant improvements by week three of the four week study.

The few minor side effects which are reported include fatigue, increased energy, and a strong case of dry mouth. 

CBD improved cognition

As well as reduced anxiety and improvements in mood, sleep, quality of life, patients also displayed improvements in measures of their self-control and ability to think flexibly.

“Specifically, patients exhibited significantly faster performance with fewer errors on several tasks of executive function relative to baseline, while assessments of visual and verbal memory remained stable.”  

CBD’s effects on anxiety symptoms and cognition is currently being researched further in a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
